artist spotlight: *marcin stawiarz
felt like doing another artist spotlight.
marcin stawiarz has a very interesting style. he does a lot of time-lapse imagery, which is interesting because he shoots mostly nature and architecture which are typically static objects. the cool part about it is the focus of the photograph, whether it be a tree or a building, is almost always surrounded by wispy clouds that give the picture movement and at the same time making the whole image seem somehow unreal.
he, like myself, chooses the creepiest trees to shoot. he pulls something from them that tells a story and draws the viewer in for a longer look. occasionally, he integrates people into his scape, tho it's never really portraits...he uses mostly silhouettes. it never ceases to amaze me how he can set the mood for the photograph just by the gesture or stance of the person.
my words could never do his images justice, so take a look. (c: enjoy!
The Last Tree
Fisherman
Treebeard
The Last March of Ents
Lloyds
Alone I Stay
Sacre Cour de Paris
Saosin
Traveller
my favorite.

not that i need to...
...explain, that is.
but i thought i'd try to do theme weeks for the photos. This week (beginning w/ 12009) started the "people and portraits" week. i'll do seven pictures that i took during a portrait session or, as in today's case, is completely random.
as you can see today's isn't necessarily a portrait, but i love hands with character and i think that this picture is MADE by patty's awesome hand. (c: it's my personal opinion and, as always, you're not required to agree, but there you have it.
up next week:

dardos
so, thanks to Todd I now hold the high honor (well...maybe medium honor) of possesing the Dardos award.
Basically (from what I've been told) the Dardos appreciates the merits - culturally, literary and individually - of every blogger who expresses him/herself on his/her blog.
Go me. (c:
Strange tho, that I'd get an award for representing myself well in a blog when I barely do that in person. I should act more like my blog...too bad I don't have a delete key in real life.
Thanks to everyone who reads, and enjoys, my random blog. You're all amazing!
Now then, the rules of Premio Dardos:
1. be tickled pink ;)
2. copy and paste the award picture to your blog
3. write down the regulations
4. link the blog who bestowed you the Award
5. and finally nominate 15 blogs for the Award
#1)Well...I'm flattered, but I don't know about tickled. Hopefully flattered will do.
#2)done.
#3)done and done.
#4)see #2. and, what the heck, #3 as well.
#5)this is the fun part...(tho todd did take a few of my choices. you should run on over to his blog for some crazy goodness on the bloggery)

past is memory. future is fantasy. now is where you find yourself.
so my entry yesterday got me to thinking about what i'm looking forward to/attempting/accomplishing in 2009.
for those interested, here's my short list:
-grow my hair.
while this may not seem like a big deal to most people, it's actually quite an accomplishment for me. my hair grows at a glacial pace, and i generally have no patience for it to grow past the "awkward stages" and it gets cut before i can get any length on it. i've been trying to grow it out for the past 4 months and every single time i wear my hair down i get the same question "did you cut your hair". honestly...is it growing backwards?!?
-climb a 14er with whitney.
she doesn't know it yet, but that's what i'm aiming for by the end of autumn this year. chelsea is studying to be a personal trainer and i'm going to be her guinea pig, so hopefully i'll be in better shape and can accomplish said task. i still don't know how my body will react to the altitude (i get pretty severe altitude sickness) but it's not going to stop me from trying. you ready for this ms. houston?
-shoot at least 2 weddings.
okay. i hate weddings. not marriage...just weddings. and i didn't hate them until i became a photographer. it's not the pictures that bother me. on the contrary. generally weddings are full of many lovely and splendid things to photograph. it's the people. why do people have to be so unkind on a day of love? seriously.
but i think that weddings are one of the most challenging things you can do as a photographer and this is a year of challenges. so bring 'em on.
-go to australia and new zealand.
those who know me well enough know that i've always wanted to go to new zealand (and by always, i mean since 1994...). now miss anna has given me an excuse to go to both australia and new zealand. not that an excuse was needed. (c;
anna is going to australia in august because she's uber cool and made the national australian rules football team (she's pretty kick-ass). whitney made a plan to meet her on the last leg of her "tour" and when we were talking about it recently i totally invited myself, pending available finances of course. but i raised the money to go to africa in 2 months...so, it's not impossible. i really hope it pans out tho, because...heck yes.
that's the list so far. here's to an interesting year. (c:

i thought frailty's name was carl
so, you may be wondering about all the pictures i'm posting.
then again, maybe you're not. either way, I felt like explaining.
it plays into something i decided for the new year. i suppose you could call it a resolution, but i'm not. basically, i've just been feeling really disappointed with my recent work and i feel like the constant shooting and being surrounded by photographers and photography while at school really helped to push me. at the same time, i started to resent photography because i was doing it so much. while i was at school i had to consistently remind myself why i loved photography, so i made myself a deal that for each REQUIRED shot i took, i made myself look for something that would please just me...not the assignment
anyway. the majority of the pictures that i've been posting (with the exception of a few) are shots that i took while at school. they are the shots that i took to keep my love of photography...which is why, when some of you asked where the photos were taken, my answer was not colorado.
there are a few recent shots in there too and i will continue to post more and more recent work. but i felt like it was good for me, a release if you will, to post these shots that i loved so much and served as a refreshment to my tired spirit, and serve now as a reminder of what i am capable of.
i sincerely appreciate all of the wonderful responses...i never expected so much. but it means a lot to me that my friends enjoyed these photographs as much as i.
thank you. thank you. thank you.
